Can a simple SMS change the way farmers respond to climate change?
Research among farmers in Tanzania reveals that many never check the weather forecast. And among the small group that does, most rely on the radio or turn to traditional methods and personal experience. This is concerning, especially as the effects of climate change and shifting rainfall patterns become increasingly evident – leading to frequent yield loss.
How much impact do our weather information SMS messages have on the lives of these farmers? The impact goes beyond helping farmers decide when to plant or harvest. It’s about raising awareness and building trust in taking climate-adaptive measures.
Within the Kilimo Thabiti project we conducted surveys among 500 farming households. The findings of this study confirmed the crucial role and the value of agro-weather SMS services. Farmers stated that the SMSs were fully understood and they found them helpful, timely and informative.
Moreover, the SMSs significantly influenced various farming decisions, such as adding fertilizer, and the selection of seed varieties. But it also influenced several daily activities, such as their irrigation scheduling and drying of agricultural products.
The provision of weather SMS services contributed to improved agricultural yields and income generation. This is being evidenced by higher maize production and higher income among farmers who received SMS-based weather information (treatment group) compared to those who did not (control group).
Building on these promising outcomes, we are committed to conduct further research, to empower even more farmers.
