Farmers work smart because of accurate weather information: “Those text messages do not mislead, they help us a lot and prepare us psychologically for the coming weather conditions. If I had a plan to dry my crops in the sun, and then I got a message that it will rain, I have to postpone drying the crops until it is sunny again. This helps us to avoid loss” said Veronica Muhende, a farmer from Sarawe village in Bunda District.

The technology introduced within the Kilimo Thabiti project, is praised by Tanzanian farmers. By delivering tailored agri-weather services and advices, farmers can better prepare and plan their farming activities. Good agricultural practices were developed for cassave, and now also for maize. The consortium partners TARI, TYEGD, ESOKO and Weather Impact recently met in Bunda district, Mara region for project meetings, and prepare for the upcoming rainseason.

An extension of the project is also be discussed. “Hopefully the service can be scaled up to farmers in other areas” said Director of research and innovation Dr. Deusdedith Mbanzibwa, who represented TARI’s Director General.
