Mapping climate extremes for The Comoros

Published on 20 April 2026 by Tamara Lancel

A meteorological challenge it was for sure!
The urgent need for detailed and reliable meteorological hazards information became clear after the cyclone Kenneth in 2019 on the Comoros Islands. We were asked to produce maps for rainfall and wind speed extremes at 1×1 km resolution. Knowing which locations face the greatest exposure allows decision-makers to prioritise resources accordingly.

Making useful high-resolution risk maps in these very data scarce regions using a combination of historical and future data, various downscaling techniques and machine learning, was one of the most rewarding projects Lorenzo worked on, since he joined Weather Impact. Using his scientific education by doing technical work in the context of climate adaptation consultancy, makes it a meaningful job, working on actual problems and supporting governments.
