Commercial agro-weather data delivery in Burkina Faso
Since 2024 Weather Impact is actively collaborating with AUXFIN to enhance the provision of tailored weather and climate information for AgriCoach in Burkina Faso. Building on a previous partnership, this project aims to improve the delivery of actionable weather insights to support farmers, agribusinesses, cooperatives, and other stakeholders in agricultural decision-making.
The project involves providing weather and climate data through a web API, ensuring accessibility and integration into the AgriCoach platform. The delivered data includes:
- Short-term weather forecasts (9 days ahead): Including weather symbols, textual weather forecasts, rainfall statistics, and rainfall likelihood thresholds.
- Daily updates on the rain season status: Presented in numeric classes and various languages.
- Drought index updates: Based on the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI).
- Monthly seasonal forecasts (5 months ahead): Incorporating rainfall symbols, textual rainfall projections, and rainfall threshold graphs.
The forecasts utilize data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), ensuring high accuracy. Messages are delivered in multiple languages, including English, French, Luganda, Swahili, and others, enabling AUXFIN to tailor messages for diverse user groups. This collaboration strengthens weather-informed agricultural practices and builds the capacity of farmers to adapt to climatic challenges in Burkina Faso.
