Weather services for AUXFIN
Within several projects, we worked together with AUXFIN to reach smallholder farmers with a range of services through the AgriCoach app, to make essential weather and crop information available and help farmers in planning and executing farming activities.
We started working with AUXFIN in 2018 with the project Gap4All, within the G4AW program, to provide smallholder farmers in Burundi with accurate weather information. AUXFIN provides financial, market and information services in a network of smallholder farmers. The services provided by AUXFIN are accessible by farmers through the online UMVA (Universal Method of Value Access) platform. One of the services within UMVA is the AgriCoach that is designed to help farmers with their day-to-day farming activities.
Weather Impact contributed to the development of the AgriCoach app, the provision of spatial information on crop selection and suitability, short-term weather forecast (10 days), seasonal outlook (5 months), rain season status indicator, and link them to good agricultural practices.
Later, the sub daily (6-hour) forecast is added to the 9-day weather forecast in Burundi. This helps farmers even better planning their farming activities.
We continued and expanded our cooperation in Burundi on a commercial basis, which makes the service financially sustainable. Succeeding, this commercial partnership has expanded to the countries Uganda and Burkina Faso as well.
Weather Impact delivers the following weather and climate data to the AgriCoach app through an API:
- (sub)daily short term weather
- daily rain season status update
- daily drought index
- monthly seasonal forecast
